What’s happening?
Imagine you are making your normal drive to work and suddenly, for no apparent reason, you feel an inexplicable wave of panic wash over your body. Your heart races, your chest aches, you feel light headed and are hyperventilating. You’re getting hot flashes and feel as though you have no control – you have to pull over for fear you’re going to crash your car!
What’s happening is a panic attack; an uncontrollable panic response to ordinary, nonthreatening situations. If this happens to a person regularly, in other non-threatening situations, it could be an indication the person has panic disorder.
